Titanic (2023 Revival)

The 2023 Broadway revival of Titanic is a Christmas gift to myself because I have always wanted to see the show even if it's only on video.  I really hope that this version of the 1997 Tony Award-winning musical by Maury Yeston and Peter Stone stayed true to its original emotional core. The show retells the tragic voyage of the RMS Titanic, blending history with personal stories of passengers from all walks of life.

The set design is impressive, transforming the stage into the ship’s grand decks and cramped lower levels. Clever lighting and projections heighten the drama, especially during the iceberg collision, creating an immersive and haunting experience.

Yeston’s score remains as moving as ever. Sweeping numbers like Godspeed Titanic and The Night Was Alive stir awe, while reflective songs such as In Every Age and No Moon underscore the humanity at the heart of the story. The lush orchestrations add to the production’s epic scale.

The cast shines throughout. Jonathan Groff delivers a commanding yet sensitive Captain Smith, while Ruthie Ann Miles brings warmth and emotional depth as the ship’s stewardess. The ensemble, playing both wealthy elites and struggling immigrants, captures the shared human tragedy across class and culture. But then, time and again - for the sake of 'inclusivity and diversity" - a colored actress performed a white role.   No comment on this because I might get cancelled.

Nevertheless, I doubt if director Michael Mayer balances historical detail with intimate character moments, ensuring even minor roles feel meaningful despite fictional approach.   Though some character arcs feel rushed, the production overall maintains strong emotional impact, particularly in the second act.

This revival hopes to strike a balance between spectacle and intimacy, and mostly there is intimacy.  However, its themes of ambition, pride, and the fragility of life resonate just as strongly today as they did more than a century ago. With its stunning visuals, powerful performances, and unforgettable music, the 2023 Titanic revival is quite a delightful experience on video, but I wish I had been able to watch the original so I could make a valid comparison.
