Judy Garland in the 1950s
It’s rather bittersweet that Judy Garland appeared in only one film throughout the entire 1950s. According to several biographies, she received numerous offers during those years. Some even suggested a role that might have earned her an Oscar. Yet it seems her deep commitment to live performances, coupled with her growing disinterest in the scripts presented, kept her away from the silver screen. After the emotionally draining years at MGM that made her constantly lose weight, concert stages must offer an energizing temporary refuge. As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a quiet disappointment not seeing her light up more films from that decade. Instead, her 1950s legacy rests in a constellation of studio recordings, rare bootleg concert tapes, and cherished television appearances. But those are already great achievements for a lost decade.
