Like A Mad Hyena

In times of political tension, the role of a presidential spokesperson is not merely to defend the administration, but to embody the dignity of public service and foster unity among citizens. The spokesperson’s words carry the weight of the presidency, and with that comes the responsibility to temper discourse, not inflame it. When partisan divisions run deep, the spokesperson must rise above factional loyalties and speak in ways that affirm the shared identity and aspirations of the Filipino people.

Regrettably, ever since this spokesperson took office, her statements have consistently produced the opposite outcome, targeting supporters of former President Duterte with language that alienates rather than engages. This is not only unjust but counterproductive. Duterte supporters, like all Filipinos, are citizens whose rights and dignity must be upheld regardless of political affiliation. To treat them as adversaries undermines the very foundation of democratic governance. After three years in office, it is troubling that the administration continues to focus its energy on vilifying perceived enemies instead of building bridges across ideological divides.

A presidential spokesperson should be a steward of national healing. That means acknowledging legitimate differences without resorting to hostility, and promoting dialogue that respects diverse perspectives. By choosing empathy over antagonism, and truth over propaganda, the spokesperson can help restore trust in public institutions. In a nation as vibrant and pluralistic as the Philippines, unity does not mean uniformity - it means recognizing that every Filipino, regardless of political leaning, is part of the same national story.
