Family Matters (2024)

At first, it was incredibly difficult to find the Korean drama series Family Matters. It wasn’t available on any major streaming platforms, not even the leading Asian ones. I was eager to watch it, mainly because of Park Lomon, whose drama choices have consistently impressed me. But after a while, I gave up searching. The title suggested a dull, melodramatic narrative about domestic issues and it seems predictable and uninspired.

Then by accident, I stumbled upon it on Dailymotion. Just six episodes, and there was Lomon, looking impossibly young and radiant. I thought, what the heck and hit play. What followed was an emotional roller coaster of shocking revelations, terrifying twists, and unsettling truths that left me questioning my own judgment. How could I have dismissed it so quickly based on the title alone? "Family Matters" wasn't what I expected at all.

Contrary to its name, the drama is not just about family problems. It delivers a scathing critique of society at large, boldly confronting the hypocrisy embedded in religion, politics, heinous crimes, and human relationships. I’ll be unpacking its depth in a separate post once I rewatch it because this series holds far more than meets the eye, and I want to make sure I catch every nuance.
