Intramuros in 1941

This colorized artwork, derived from Carl Mydans’ original 1941 black-and-white photograph for LIFE Magazine, stands as a haunting proof of life that once thrived within the ancient walled city of Intramuros. Captured mere months before its catastrophic destruction during World War II, the image evokes a Manila that was elegant, dignified, and distinctly Filipino. It was an urban jewel shaped by centuries of cultural layering and Spanish rule.

Its ruin came at the hands of the Japanese Imperial Army, and through the relentless bombing campaigns of the Allied forces, particularly the Americans, whose military strategy prioritized victory over preservation. What followed was the brutal annihilation of human lives, devastating  collapse of buildings, and the erasure of memory, artistry, and identity. Intramuros was reduced to rubble, and with it, a vital piece of the Filipino soul.

It is a bitter irony that foreign powers who claimed to bring civilization, progress, or liberation left behind scars deeper than conquest. Filipinos never sought colonization. They were subjected to it. First by the Spanish, who imposed centuries of religious and cultural domination; then by the Americans, who rebranded imperialism as tutelage; and finally by the Japanese, whose wartime occupation brought terror and devastation. Each wave of foreign rule brought its own brand of cruelty, exploitation, and erasure.

The destruction of Manila was never inevitable because it was a choice. Consider Thailand, which was also occupied by Japan but spared the annihilation that befell the Philippines. Why? Because no Allied forces intervened to shatter its cities under the guise of liberation. Manila, by contrast, became a battlefield where foreign powers settled their scores, indifferent to the lives and legacies caught in between.

This image, now colorized, is a visual restoration and an act of remembrance. It insists that before the bombs fell, before the walls crumbled, there was beauty, prosperity, and pride, despite the violence inflicted upon our heritage.
