Paraluman in the Age of Pixels
This digital artwork draws inspiration from an 1890s black-and-white photograph of an unidentified Filipino woman. Using Canva, I carefully colorized and reimagined the image, transforming the background, refining the dress, and employing AI tools to subtly recreate her likeness in the image of the Sampaguita film actress Paraluman.
While AI served only as a supportive tool, I consider this a piece of digital art rather than an AI-generated image. It involved multiple creative platforms and many hours of hands-on editing on a desktop computer, and far beyond a quick filter or mobile app adjustment. Every element, from the color grading to the composition, was deliberately shaped to bring the portrait to life while preserving a sense of period authenticity.
I chose Paraluman as my muse for her timeless elegance and mestiza grace, qualities that beautifully reflect the sophistication of the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines. Through this work, I sought to merge history, artistry, and technology into a portrait that feels both nostalgic and alive.
